  1. A visit to the Great Wall is really a MUST when you visit Beijing! Writing about the wall doesn’t do it justice. You’ll just have to go and experience it 🙂

We went with a bus tour booked out of our hotel. The journey to the wall took about 90 minutes, and our guide gave us some history and also prepared us for the hawkers that line the path up to the cable car.

Tip: we went in October, leaving the hotel at 2 pm..We were there for about 2 hours (3:30 – 5:30) and got to experience a beautiful late afternoon/sunset. The number of people at the wall dropped quickly after 4 p.m., and we were able to experience great sections of the wall with almost NO other people around!

Warning: the hawkers lining the wall are indeed aggressive. While they yell “one dollar!” at you for their goods, they really don’t mean it 🙂 If you’re feeling brave and up for a bargaining adventure, negotiating a price on some tourist-y stuff can add to your adventure. Otherwise, just ignore them and walk though the “gauntlet” without focusing on the hub-bub. The Wall is worth it!
